Rhys on the beach

Sunday 11.15 am

The extensive sand-dunes at Harlech are continually shape-shifting under direction from the wind whipping in from the Irish Sea. Despite this instability, the wildlife is prolific and in springtime, there can be a dazzling array of flowers amongst the long grasses. Tess made her way through this scented heaven carrying hastily bought breakfast pastries and coffee. Today she had a pretty, feminine look. Her long flowing skirt was a good match for the tie-at-the-waist blouse she had bought at Primark just a few days ago, despite it only looking like it would take one wash. Even her hair, normally lank and unmanageable, had a healthy sheen in the casual bun on top of her head. Her cheekbone, covered in a large dollop of foundation managed to not look that bad although it certainly still felt sore.

Tess stopped for a moment as a beautiful silver-studded blue butterfly fluttered around her. She took a few photos to post to her real Instagram account later. Taking in the wonderful sunshine and glorious aspects of the natural world around her, she felt strangely renewed. She had had a disastrous day yesterday so from now on, surely the only way was up. The fact that the coming storm had not yet darkened the skies added to her unexpected optimism.

It was depressing though to think that she would just have to step back and not force the issue anymore. Steve would just need more time. Last night she was adamant that she hated him, but this morning, especially now in the sunshine she knew there was an annoying small part of her that couldn’t face the huge effort that divorcing him would entail.

As always she wondered what Dorothy would say, but she knew her friend was at yoga this morning, she would have to wait till later to speak to her, and even then, she admitted to herself, she wouldn’t tell her everything.

She took off her bright flip-flops and walked barefoot along the main beach heading south, enjoying the feeling of the sand between her toes. She had always loved walking barefoot. As a girl she loved to race down the gravel drive and back, barefoot in the rain, making her foster mum call to her to come in in case she caught a cold or trod on a nail. She didn’t realise what fun she was having. Dorothy told her years later that it was called earthing, and provided health benefits such as increased antioxidants, reduced inflammation, and improved sleep.

‘The planet has its own natural charge,’ she said, ‘and we do a lot better when we’re in direct contact with it.’ Good old Dorothy, Tess thought. She wondered about the phone call they would have later. Where could she even begin? She wished she could tell her the whole picture, but she knew that her friend had boundaries that could never be crossed. If she knew that Steve had hit her, even just once, then she would be emphatic that he must go.
